Peter Dornier long regarded donations as a private matter, but changed this when he established the Peter Dornier Foundation in 1985 following a dispute with Daimler-Benz AG. The foundation undertakes to dedicate a portion of the profits earned together with the employees to the common good. Dornier supported projects in areas such as aid for the disabled, combating hunger, refugee aid, tropical forest protection, monument preservation and culture. Supporting the disadvantaged, preserving nature and cultural heritage and promoting music and art were particularly important to him.
Since 2021, the foundation has awarded the annual Peter Dornier Foundation Prize, which is endowed with 5,000 euros. It honors outstanding scientific work by young people in textile, film and fiber composite technology as well as aerospace and serves as recognition and motivation.
